ETS management with MS-Access

For the management of an ETS, the Microsoft Access data base manager can be used. For each ETS, files enabling modification of the execution environment of a test suite can be installed.

These files are :

  • ".PIA" : values and descriptions of the parameters of this ETS. The parameters are the PICS (Protocol Implementation Conformance Statement) and the PIXIT’s (Protocol Implementation eXtra Information for Testing).
  • ".TDA" : list of tests included in the ETS. Each test is described fully: name, purpose and type of execution.
  • "ETS.MDB" : ACCESS data base allocated to this ETS.
  • "ACCETS.HLP" : on-line help during data base use.

ETS.MDB Database

The "ETS.MDB" database file was created with the Microsoft ACCESS Version 2.0 data base management system.

The data base must first be opened:

  • launching the Microsoft Access data base manager.
  • opening the data base (File, Open a data base, ...).
Attention : the data base must be opened by selecting the installation directory of this ETS.
  • (example: C:\CLAETS\L3B).

The input dialogues of the various ETS items are in the form of menus. At each dialogue level, on-line help is available merely by pressing the F1 key.

Before closing the data base, the dialogue will have enabled you to save the various modifications.

Attention : The profiles used must include the modifications of the User program parameters (TDA or PIA files).

Selection of Testscases

It is possible to choose to execute (or not) certain tests present in an ETS. To do this, one has only to select them or disable them through means of the dialogue provided.

After opening the data base, the "xxx.TDA" file to be edited is selected. Two display modes exist:

  • "Edit/select Testcases" : each test is displayed individually with all the information related to it (purpose, ...). Selection of tests can be carried out according to several criteria (name, status tested, purpose ...).
  • "List Testcases" : all the tests are displayed in the form of a list. They may be selected or disabled individually.

Pics/Pixit input

After opening the data base, the "xxx.PIA" file to be edited is selected.

Inputting Pics or Pixit parameters is carried out using several modes :

  • Boolean : only values authorized: 0 and 1.
  • Decimal : values authorized: [0-9].
  • Hexadecimal : values authorized: [0-9a-f]. Because of the string size limited to 255 characters by MS-ACCESS, the string entry can be replaced by the reference of a file name ("file.hex"): the hexadecimal contents would be used by the execution.

The ZOOM function (SHIFT F2) allows the display completely the content of the "Purpose" fields.

The modifications are saved either in the file (SAVE command) or while creating a new one (SAVE AS command).
